What an amazing start to the season! This weekend, Team Wolverhampton SLAM secured four impressive wins across all age groups, with standout performances from these top scorers:
Great job to all our players and congratulations to the top scorers!
Team Highlights:
U18 Boys' Team
The U18 boys kicked off their 2024-25 season with a commanding home win over Shrewsbury Storm, defeating them 67-51 to advance to the second round of the NBL Cup.
Coach Dan Hollyhomes said:
“A good start to the season, I feel, although we got the strong win, we still have a lot to learn about control both offence and defence. However, everyone played their part in this win, and I am overall pleased with how the team performed. I think we have a strong team with a lot of potential, and we can make some serious waves this season!”
U18 Girls' Team
The U18 girls started their season on the road, winning a hard-fought battle against Newcastle Eagles 56-52, advancing to the second round of the NBL Cup.
Coach Mark Evans shared:
“It was a gutsy performance from SLAM! U18 girls in their first ever game in this age group. After a long journey, they overcame a slow start and started to impose their will on the game. Down 6 points with 3 minutes to go, Coach Evans and Coach Anderson called a timeout, and the girls came out and got all important stops and hit clutch shots to seal the win. Well done, girls!”
U16 Boys' Team
The U16 boys showed their strength in their season opener, beating Lincoln Panthers in the NBL Sure Shot round 1 cup game.
Assistant Coach Tony Milovsorov commented:
“We came out strong during the first half, where our task seemed easy. The opposition created problems in the second half, and we made it harder for ourselves than it needed to be. Defensive issues allowed the opposition to drive to the basket repeatedly, and we lacked help defence. Foul troubled made things harder still, but we did well to maintain control of the game and to win our first ever U16 National Cup game.”
Men's Team
The Men’s team rounded off the weekend with a solid win against Redditch Regents.
Coach Kofi Ruddock remarked:
“We started the game showing inexperience of Prem level competition. However, we were able to weather the storm of three's and efficient shooting, zoned in on the main threats from Redditch, applying pressure to them and then playing for each other on the offence end, which lead to secure the victory.”
Great start to the season, SLAM! Let’s keep the momentum going as we head into round 2!
